Renovations on the Clifton Community Center are Wrapping Up!

posted Dec 8, 2014, 3:09 PM by Site Administrator   [ updated Dec 8, 2014, 3:18 PM ]

The renovations being done on the Clifton Community Center are finally concluding after a long 18 months. We are thrilled to have been made so welcome by the staff of the McKie Community Center in Northside and the community of that area alike, but it's good to know that we are finally getting ready to go back to the center that has been home to the Cincinnati Fencing Club for so long!

I have had the opportunity to take a tour through the completely refurbished facility and it is spectacular! They have done an enormous amount of work on the building and expanded their usable space significantly.

The Cincinnati Fencing Club will return to the Clifton Center on the 5th of January, which will be a Monday class night. As per usual, we will begin at 7:30pm and will begin clean up at 8:45pm. Advanced fencers will still have a second meeting day of Thursdays with fencing starting at 7:00pm and going until 8:45pm.

Swinging Into the Summer

Last Monday night, the 1st of July, we had a tremendous turnout for all three of our regular classes. Not even the rising thermometer can stop our members from getting their swordplay! We are all excited to have another great Thursday (which have been very well attended the last couple of weeks), before our holiday weekend.

If anyone is wondering what they should be doing tonight, the answer is, "Fencing!"
    See you on the piste!

The CFC will be relocating temporarily to Northside Starting August 19th

posted Jul 28, 2013, 5:51 AM by Site Administrator

The Cincinnati Recreation Commission is going to be refurbishing the Clifton Community Center starting at the end of August in order to update the aging building. The work is going to last for somewhere between one and two years and the club will be returning to Clifton once the work is finished.

Until such a time as the Clifton center is reopened, however, Tom Reese (center director from Clifton) and the Recreation Commission have been extremely helpful in assisting us in finding a new home in the intervening time.

As such, the CFC will be moving to the McKie Community Center located in Northside on Chase Avenue. McKie has just been renovated, their work having just finished in November, 2012 and so their center is a wonderful and finely appointed and will be a great temporary home for the club.

The last day the club will be at the center in 2013 will be August 15th, which is a Thursday. Monday August 19th will be the first night that we will be at the new center.

On Saturday, December 15 AFAD is hosting the Two Swords and A Sled Cadet Foil and Open Epee, sleds for the winners! This is in Kettering, OH.

Also on Saturday, December 15 The Bourbon Open is being held in Louisville, KY.

Interesting information about scholarships

posted Aug 27, 2012, 3:02 PM by Site Administrator

This diagram illustrates various sports and the percentage of scholarships given to high school students as they matriculate on to college. While Rowing tops the charts for both male and female student athletes, you may notice that fencing is right there on the top of the list as well for both genders. My guess is that there is a need to train competent and well educated pirates. So get your oars and you blades kids!

Local Fencing Spotlit by WCPO Cincinnati!

Thursday, March 15th between noon and 1:00pm, Cincinnati's own Charles Flatt (co-manager of the Hudson Centers for Martial Arts) will be giving a brief demonstration on WCPO Channel 9 in preparation for the North American Cup tournament that will be happening this weekend!

Charles will be discussing the three types of weapons, showing the basic form, and giving Tanya O'Rourke the basic movements of a parry riposte!

I hope everyone will have an opportunity to watch the show and I'm hoping that we'll be able to find the spot on the station's website after it airs!

Good luck, Charles!
