Beginning Fencing introduces students to the sport of fencing. This group class focuses on foil fundamentals. New fencers can start the program at any time; fencing is a lifetime sport! This class is available to ages of 10+.
Children under 10 require more individual attention rather than a group environment, which is the method of instruction that the we employ. There are 3 other clubs (listed on our Links Page) that offer more extensive lessons and may be more appropriate to young children.
This class is team-taught by members of the Cincinnati Fencing Club.
Topics covered include:
History and Background of Fencing
The Weapons of Fencing (foil, saber, epee)
Safety
Proper Stance (En Garde)
Footwork
Lunges
Attacks
Parries
Rules of Competitive Fencing
Strategy and Tactics
The equipment rental provides a mask, foil, jacket and glove during class. Students should wear loose fitting clothes, including sweat pants (not shorts), tennis shoes and an eyeglass strap if wearing glasses.
Classes last from 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Students who have progressed to the third lesson can expect to spend at least a half-hour of the class fencing with the instructors and other students.
All activities taking place through the CRC require participants to have valid and up to date memberships.
Everyone involved in fencing activities must have this membership. However, the Center will allow for one time passes for prospective members who want to come and give us a try prior to signing up for the full year.
For those that have gone through our 7 week Beginner Course or those that have comparable experience fencing already, we have the general membership of the CFC. Our mission is to provide an accessible, low cost entry, or reentry, to the sport of fencing in the Greater Cincinnati Area. Our focus is on safety, fundamentals and foundations, having fun, and growing as a community.
We charge membership fees on a calendar year basis, meaning that memberships roll over in January of each new year, for ease of accounting.
